Our 2014 trip to Europe is almost complete when we drive from the mountains around the twelve hundred year-old village Barga to the most fascinating European Middle Ages city/empire in Europe – Venice. Up to 1866, when it joined Lombardy and the emerging Italy, it was still under the thumb of the Austrians and prior to 1815 under Napoleon from 1797 when it lost its independence. But as magnificent as this man-made city remains, the magnificence of nature at Lago Como and Lago Maggiore match it for splendour and drama. We end our Italian visit at Reno di Leggiune on the Maggiore and cross it Piedmont to visit the incredible Borromeo islands Madre and Bella.
